The Grand Junction Metropolitan Area

Grand Junction, Colorado, the nation's newest metropolitan area, is the county seat and business community of Mesa County. Located 250 miles west of Denver, Grand Junction is easily accessible by highway and the modern airport facilities at Grand Junction's Walker Field.

Grand Junction is located in a valley at the junction of the Colorado and Gunnison rivers on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains. With an elevation of 4,586 feet, Grand Junction is surrounded on all sides by mountains reaching heights of 9,000 to 10,500 feet. This unique and playful stretch of the Colorado River offers many surprising choices limited only by one's imagination.

A long-established agricultural industry and a growing manufacturing industry and tourist trade provide Grand Junction with a diversified economic base. Because it serves as the supply center for many smaller towns in a large part of western Colorado and eastern Utah, Grand Junction has the amenities and opportunities of a community several times its size. The Grand Junction Metropolitan Area, with a population of 100,000, serves as the transportation, medical, professional and cultural center of western Colorado.

Nestled at the foot of the majestic Colorado National Monument, Fruita, Colorado, is a year-round outdoor adventure destination. Enjoy activities from mild to wild when you walk the paths of the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area or fly down rugged single track mountain bike trails. Fruita has world class golf and world famous scenery, soaring rock climbs and serene wilderness.

Grand Junction offers a mild climate with dry, warm summers and moderate winters. On average the sun shines in Grand Junction three out of four days. With such a mild climate Grand Junction is the hub of some of the finest and most varied recreational activities in Colorado.

Golf, tennis and biking can be enjoyed in the Grand Valley nearly year-round. The local Powderhorn Ski Resort provides excellent downhill skiing for skiers of all abilities, and some of the finest cross-country skiing areas can be found on the nearby Grand Mesa. Within an hour of Grand Junction the outdoor enthusiast can hunt, fish, waterski, ride horses, follow jeep trails and snowmobile. Raft trips on some of the best rapids in the country are available just outside of Grand Junction.
